A WIN, WIN SITUATION! - Goal Setting
I interrupt my semi-scheduled down time to share a HUGE CHEER!!!
I had so much fun with the WRA New Design Launch Contest and was proud to award the fantastic winners entries with Amazon Certificates I knew would be cherished. I never imagined how speedy karmic gratitude and generosity can be.
Today I discovered that my entry to the Writing.Com Dear Me: 2008 contest WON FIRST PLACE!!! The award? A $100 Amazon Gift Certificate.
I’m so excited! There are a multitude of books about writing and freelancing on my Amazon wish list and I’ll finally be able to splurge a little on myself.
LEVERAGE: MUST DO NOW
I have to admit, I didn’t enter the contest with any hope of winning. I simply thought it was a fantastic opportunity to nail down my career goal for 2008. I’ve learnt it is vital to gain leverage on yourself when setting goals. To truly commit you have to dig for the reasons that this goal is a MUST DO NOW kind of goal. Why is it important to commit to this goal, to make it a success, right at this moment.
ACHIEVABLE AND MEASURABLE
When setting a goal it must be one that is realistic. Something that CAN be accomplished and that you truly believe you can accomplish. Deciding you’re going to become a millionairre when you’re flat broke with no income prospects is unrealistic UNLESS you’ve devised a solid plan of action. If you’ve put together the steps and truly believe you can accomplish that goal, AND have a way to measure your success and alter your coarse to suit it as you go, then you really CAN blow everyone out of the water with what might originally seem unrealistic goals.
DEFINE THE STEPS
Those steps are the true key. Break down your goal into small stepping stones to success. Define each of those smaller goals and gain leverage on them. Discuss why these goals are important both on their own and for the greater scheme of your primary goal. Make sure each of these smaller steps are achievable and measurable too and if you need to, break them into even smaller goals until they are bit-sized chunks that can become routine.
This is the key to successful goal setting and I guess someone in the powers that be at Writing.Com agree because those are the elements of my Dear Me: 2008 entry! Feel free to check it out and leave a comment here telling me what you think of the entry, the contest, and my celebration of the $100 Amazon win!
Stay tuned for another fantastic guest blog from Amy Mullis later today!

Hello Rebecca,
Read your award winning business plan and WOW! I love the thought you put into it. It is very comprehensive and worthy of the award.
I also appreciated your writing on goal setting, thank you or not writting about the SMART goal approach we all hear about so often.
As a life coach I work on goal setting with clients often, one strategy I use with my clients and would like to offer you is how to create a Fast Forward Challenge that will get you moving faster towards the achievement of your goals. For a Fast Forward Challenge I encourage clients to take a goal they are currently working on, this could be one of the defined steps and benchmark what you know you can do at the effort you plan to put into it. Now add 20% (however you would measure that), state it as a challenge, enlist some form of support (an accountaility partner, mentor, coach, etc) and GO FOR IT!
To Your Continued Success!

@ Melissa: Thank you so much for your congratulations. It really did make my day. Now I have so many books to read. lol
@ LaskiGal: Thanks!
@ Michele: *blushes* Thank you so much for your wonderful praise and compliments, Michele. If only it were as easy to STICK to a business plan as it is to write one. Still, that gift certificate did help my career a great deal and I am thankful to have that incentive to strive on.
@ Jodi: Thank you so much. From a life coach it means a lot to me to hear appreciation for my goal setting techniques. I’ve found myself developing a goal setting technique that blends many of the fantastic qualities of other techniques such as Tony Robbins’ R.P.M. and S.M.A.R.T. as well as to do lists and day planning to accomplish forward momentum.
I’m intrigued by your Fast Forward Challenge but I don’t think I could do it. I often struggle with accomplishing the simplist of goals and fall apart when the pressure stacks on. My Bipolar can be lethal in that regard because despite my best intensions when I start juggling too many plates or when the odds are stacked high on just one of them it all comes crashing down.
Any suggestions for dealing with that? I’ve been working at the stepping stone concept. Tony Robbins calls it Chunking. Where you break down those BIG ideas and focus only on the next, tiny step on the path and take action on that step NOW.
