Finding Your Writing Zone [Guest Post]
Writing, for me, represents an island. I am the island, my words are a vast body of water. With each wave, they are cast further out to sea until I can’t see them anymore. I’ve released them.
Writing is a gift, a treasure like no other. It is an avenue in which we can travel at speeds only we control. It is a way to explore our hearts, minds, and souls. It is beautiful.
Writing is a vehicle
By way of our earthly vessels, our imaginations can lead us through portals of endless creativity allowing us to indulge in places, experiences, and senses we only fantasize about.
With this outlet comes the ability to dream and wonder to our heart’s desire, as well as the reality that possibilities are endless. We can envision that parents stay together, children are healthy, the world is color blind, and homes are safe. We can believe in fairy tales in our minds, if only our minds.
In fantasy fiction, or any genre, as Rebecca has taught us, we can shower beneath the Idea Waterfall until we’re overflowing with inspiration that cascades onto the page before our eyes, spilling onto the next and the next until a story is born.
Writing Zone Exercise
Life is fast, crazy, and loud. Let’s shut out the noise for a moment. As the world turns loudly, pretend your world stops. Chaos is no more. The phone isn’t ringing, the dog isn’t barking, and nobody is calling your name. Embrace the silence. Make it your own. Peace envelops you. Can you feel it? Can you hear the quiet? Are you sitting in a huge, oversized leather chair with a laptop? Do you feel the warmth from the fireplace? Hear the logs settle, crackling?
You’ve found your inner writing zone. It’s a place only you can visit. No one can come with you. Notice how relaxed you are. Nice, isn’t it?
When you’re finished reading this post, I want you to close your eyes and meditate in your writing zone. Be at peace. Bathe in Rebecca’s Idea Waterfall. Absorb every single splash that hits you. Now write. Write how you would like for things to be. Write about what you’ve dreamt of, hoped for, wished for, yearned for, aspired to be…
Visualize the finish line
Isn’t it invigorating to relax, dig to the deepest depths of your soul, and let it go? Go on. Don’t let us stop you. Go crazy! Write a short story. Write a novella. Write a novel! Write until your fingers hurt. Write until you can’t see the letters on your keyboard.
Take your readers on the journey only you see in your head. Show them every nook and cranny, every detail of what it was like. Don’t hold back.
Can you see that short story published? That novella? Look. Real close. See your novel on store shelves? With your name on the cover? That’s the idea. Now go for it!

I love that line, too. It’s true, we should write until we can’t see the letters on the keyboard anymore.:-) I’m glad you enjoyed it.
