Jodi, good question! Yes, for the most part, it's impossible to remember what, exactly, we were wearing on any given day, say, back in fourth grade or something! So as you suggest, then, simply describe yourself in an item of clothing you DO recall from that general period of time. Or, give it your best shot: What was your favorite color of clothes? What kinds of clothes, to your best collection, do you recall wearing? Look at old photos and SEE what you were wearing during that time frame. Anything along those lines is fine. Providing these kinds of details, especially to reach a larger emotional truth, is absolutely acceptable. Sue

I can see the tremendous differneces sensory detials make from your comparisons. I was wondering, since memoir is from memory and most of us have terrible memories(me at least!), is it OK to make up details you don't remember to underline the emotions you were feeling. For example, you don't remember what you were wearing on the day you were so happy but you remember the yellow "buttercup" dress from your childhood so you use it in the scene?

Fantastic post, it definitely pays to draw the reader in with sensory descriptions. Can't wait to read this book.
