Freelancing can be a rough business. Receiving rejections, tedious rewrites, grumpy editors and more can plague everyone’s day and leave your family drained from the day’s ups and downs. It might seem like a great idea to work later into the evening or throughout the weekend to catch up. When deadlines are looming, a few extra hours is okay, but remembering to unwind and play is important, too.

Exercise is important for multiple reasons. Exerting energy in bursts offers inspiration, boosts your metabolism, provides an outlet to physically exert frustrations, and helps keep your body healthy to handle the stressors of the day. Spending the weekend away from the computer with your family offers plenty of activities that serve a dual purpose: exercise and bonding.

Tips and Suggestions:

A picnic lunch at the park.

When planning your picnic out, remember to include plenty of items for outdoor fun. Outdoor balls, wiffle balls and bats, plastic golfing games, frisbees, horseshoes and a volleyball serve in a pinch depending on your location. If you find a part that serves different outdoor sports, invite friends and extended family to come along for added conversation and fun.

Walking along the waterways.

There’s a great program sponsored by Geocaching.com called, “Cache in, trash out.” You can apply the same principle to any outdoors walk you take. Carry with you a couple of small trash bags and pick up any debris along the way that could harm the space you have to meander. Not only are you doing your body good when walking, you’ve made a positive impact on the environment. Who couldn’t feel good about that?

Biking and Hiking in the hills and mountains.

Planning a trip to the mountains takes a bit more planning. You must remember all your basic necessities including water, survival tools (knife, flints, flares) as well as pack high energy foods capable of sustaining you in the event you are trapped for the night. Investing in insulating blankets to carry is a wise idea, too. Seldom do people find themselves stuck on the mountain with no way down, but if it happened to you, it would provide an amazing story to pitch to an editor once you return to civilization.

Visiting a zoo or other local museum.

When the weather is less than favorable for an outdoor adventure, spending time inside might just serve you well. As long as you are away from your work space and doing something outside your normal routine. Walking through a zoo or large museum will exercise your body and mind. Animals and displays from the past will recharge your inspirational pool.

For many writers, finding balance between home and family can be difficult. No matter how you are pulled to put in an extra couple of hours, make sure you are choosing your hours wisely. If you can spent time out recharging yourself and build memories with your family, it’s more than worth staying up an hour later or rising an hour early to finish out that assignment. Afterall, why work hard to achieve success when you aren’t reaping the benefits of what you sow?

If you’ve ever put up a fence – or even watched anyone – you’ll know that it involves several steps. You don’t just walk out there, stand up a ready-made fence and walk away. No, you have to measure, dig holes, make sure things are level, and so on.

Freelancing is no different. You don’t just walk into a publication’s office and plop your article or book on their desk and end up with your work published immediately – and without editing.

It’s a process.

You have to put in the time. Some of us do things differently, but basically we: study, research, write, rewrite, edit, proofread, query, follow up, invoice, read, correspondence, and more…

Here’s a fun summary of how fence building is similar to building a writing career…

Example 1: The Plan and Outline

Fence Building

Once you’ve decided you want a fence, you must figure out what type of fence you want. Is your fence for decoration? Simply curb appeal? Or is it to keep pets or children tucked safely within the perimeters of your property? How much money can – or will – you spend on your fence project? Will you hire a professional – or do it yourself?

Writing

The same applies to freelancing/writing. What kind of freelance writer do you want to be? The author of several books? Do you want to be featured in top-notch, glossy magazines? Do you want to be a famous blogger? All of the above? And what will you write about? How much money (and time) are you willing to spend on your dreams? Will you hire an editor or fellow writers? Or will you be the only go-to source of your business?

Example 2: Research and Preparation

Fence Building

Once you’ve chosen the details of your fence project, you’ll need the correct tools. Will you dig each fence post hole by hand, with post-hole diggers, or will you buy (or rent) a tractor and augur? Pick up your screws, concrete mix, tape measurer, level, and anything else need to complete your project – including a quality pair of gloves!

Writing

And when you know in your heart what topics or genres you’ll be writing in, where will you go from there? Will you attend writer’s conventions or retreats? Will you invest in books, classes, or seminars that may help you advance in your writing career? What about a new computer? Office? Desk? Chair? Bookshelves? How far will you go to gather everything you feel necessary to soar in your writing career? Don’t forget high-speed Internet!

Example 3: The Finishing Touches

Fence Building

As each post goes in, your fencing project is progressing. Things are moving along. Then as each panel is installed, the fence will start to look finished, complete. You begin to feel good about yourself, about your abilities, and that you stuck with it instead of calling someone to finish for you. Or, if you hired someone, you’re feeling relieved at this point that it will be over soon and your life can resume its normal routine.

Writing

Just because you write a fabulous article or essay – or even a book – doesn’t mean that you’re job is finished. You then need to promote your work, build a readership, study publisher’s guidelines, etc.

And so you see, building a fence is similar to writing in that even once the fence is built and you’ve done a wonderful job and people drive by, admiring the beauty and all your hard work – you will need to maintain that fence. If it’s wood, you’ll need to keep it painted over the years because it will naturally weather and will require your attention and polishing to make it look new again and keep it in the condition you desire.

What is your favorite fence? How does it relate to your writing business? My dream fence is a tall, iron one like you see in the movies. I wonder if that’s because I’m a homebody and love to write from the safety – and peace – of my own home? Can you see how building fences is similar to the writing process? What resonates with you the most?

This weekend she’s doing a special promotion.

How can you take part? “Each book has its own custom bookplate designed and signed by Jennifer Greenleaf. All customers have to do is forward their receipt to Jennifer once the purchase has been made, and then they will receive their signed bookplate. The email you need to use in order to receive your custom bookplate is jgbooksigning@aol.com“. So get yourself the book or books of your choice and get in touch with Jennifer. Meanwhile, enjoy a few words from Jennifer about making success happen.

Even though I’ve been writing professionally since 1999, I still feel I’m very wet behind the ears when it comes to career building. When I first started out, I felt I needed to depend on others in order to find success and make things happen. Here are a couple of areas where I went wrong:

I thought if my target market approached me for work, I was successful. WRONG.

I thought if I got my name “out there,” that would be all I had to do to obtain writing gigs and clients. WRONG.

Not only was I depending on people to contact me, but I was also depending on other people (like the places where I was published, for example) to get my name out there. Despite being a motivated self-starter, I wasn’t “making it happen.” It took me about three years to realize these mistakes, and I’ve been working on “in your face” type promotions for my freelance writing and books.

There are a number of ways YOU can make it happen. Here are a few:

Query often: querying has to be part of your regular routine if you want your freelance writing career to really work. This is, of course, unless you have already created a good stable of steady work. For those who are novice in the field, it’s essential to make this a fixture in your work schedule.

Blog regularly: Google is a tool your prospective gigs, clients, and editors will use to find out more about you. This is true even if you’ve already landed the job. If you’re blogging regularly about a topic your passionate about or your career, they’re able to see a consistent stream of writing samples regularly. They’ll also learn a bit about your style, maybe learn about some of your goals, and probably figure out what your favorite kind of ice cream is…wait…never mind….

Be reliable: if for some reason you’re unable to make a deadline, be known for good communication. Don’t be unreliable; otherwise you’ll quickly earn yourself a bad reputation. You’d be surprised who knows whom in which circles and, before you know it, you’ve earned yourself a bad name. I learned a trick when I was first starting out to write “dummy” deadlines on my calendar that was a few days prior to the real one. That way, I’m always early or right on time!

This is a New Year and good opportunity to dream big, and make your career exactly what you envision it to be. Follow other writers who are making it happen, learn the ropes of the business from writing websites (like this one, for example), and be realistic about what you can accomplish and when. You can make it happen!

Ultimately, continuing to work when unwell leads to lowered productivity and extended ailments. The simple fact is, if we don’t rest when ill, we won’t recover as swiftly. Indeed, the added stress of needing to meet deadlines and maintain quality can increase the severity of our affliction. What are some alternatives to working through illness?

When a traditional employee calls to take a day of sick leave the manager will make arrangements to have someone else work that shift. They might find an employee working on cross hours, hire agency staff, or temporarily increase the team workload, but someone is there to fill the shoes of the absent worker. Why don’t freelancers ask for help when they are sick?

In this fantastic e-book they talk about the vital need to outsource or cross-source. This could be a perfect example of how freelancers benefit from asking for help.

#1: Outsourcing or cross-sourcing can allow you time to recover while not losing the potential income or goodwill of your clients.

While it might seem like paying someone else to work on your behalf costs you money the truth is, the long term benefits far exceed the short term expense. When we are sick, every hour we work produces less; less quality, less quantity, less results. Our clients have expectations and we have to work harder than ever to meet those expectations. By hiring healthy workers we can still meet the demands of our clients, and even surpass them, while reducing the stress to complete everything ourselves.

#2: Leverage your time by outsourcing or cross-sourcing.

We all have a limited number of hours each week with which we can work. Many freelancers feel locked into those hours as the only hours available to them. Locked into these hours we have a limited growth potential, we can only take on a set schedule of clients, jobs, and commissions before making sacrifices in other areas of our lives. By employing others we can increase our available hours, two freelancers doubles your available time.

#3: Take on more commissions, expand your clientele.

Why sacrifice sleep to meet a crushing deadline? Why give up time with our children because we have one more article to research and write? Why turn down that fantastic commission, disappoint that potential client, because we’ve already a full plate of work this week? The truth is, we don’t have to give up or turn down, anything. By working with others we can accept more work than one freelancer could complete on their own. More commissions and more clients means more money, for everyone.

#4: Do more of the work you love and none of the work you hate.

Even when we are sick there are emails to answer, invoices to send, and any of a hundred small jobs that we hate to do. These maintenance tasks need to be completed but honestly, any able worker could do what takes many hours of each day. By outsourcing these tasks you can focus on the aspects of your freelancing career that you love.

When a freelancer gets sick, they can either work through the illness, turn out mediocre results, delay recovery, and miss deadlines, or we can ask for help. Develop a team of freelancers you can turn to when your workload becomes unmanageable or illness descends.

Can you think of other reasons to outsource? Have you ever considered outsourcing some of your work when ill? Where do you find quality freelancers when you need help? What other alternatives are there to working through illness?

How do you measure success?

What is the image that comes to mind when you think of yourself as successful, or when you imagine other successful people? For many of us, success is distant, something almost intangible that we are constantly reaching for, striving toward.

The real trouble with success is it’s a moving target. On our endless journey toward this obscure sense of what we wish for ourselves, we forget to acknowledge the small milestones. Each time we reach those milestones we are already looking ahead to the next.

There are two questions I try to ask myself regularly:
What is your concept of success, today? and
What have you already accomplished?

The first question gives us the target, the second rewards and acknowledges the milestones we’ve already reached. It’s important to pause and acknowledge your successes. Take a moment to look around you, see how far you’ve already come, because the horizon remains a distant point every step you take but the distance behind you becomes an expansive haven of success.

Alex Noble said, “If I have been of service, if I have glimpsed more of the nature and essence of ultimate good, if I am inspired to reach wider horizons of thought and action, if I am at peace with myself, it has been a successful day.”

For many, success equals happiness. Knowing that right this moment, we are already successful is uplifting and confidence-inspiring. In this very moment we have fostered many successes, there are a great many things we have done right. Right now, what have you accomplished up to this moment?

When building on your list of accomplishments look beyond your business or career and consider your personal successes. Do you have happy, healthy children? Wow! That is a HUGE success! Being a parent is one of the greatest challenges and every day offers a thousand potential successes. Have you done something to strengthen your romantic relationship recently? Have you read something interesting, written something inspiring, connected with others, had an idea, put a new plan into action, watered the garden, checked a chore off your to-do list?

Your life is full of these small, milestone successes. Pause in your dogged-determination toward your future success and see the pebble-strewn path you’ve already walked. Each pebble is an accomplishment, an achievement, a hurdle you’ve conquered and a step you will never have to take again. Reward yourself for having come so far.

To follow without halt, one aim; there is the secret of success. And success? What is it? I do not find it in the applause of the theater; it lies rather in the satisfaction of accomplishment.” ~ Anna Pavlova

THEN, set your new target firmly in your sights. Make sure it is a new success that isn’t so far distant the edges blur. Ensure your vision of success today is sharp, clear, and inspiring. See your success, feel it to the very depth of you, and step those pebbles on the path toward it.

In the post, Jenny talks about this mantra and how learning to live it and write it helped her career grow. In 2008 she continued to do amazing things as she learned, lived, and wrote. As I read over her post again, I started to really think about the questions she asked last year.

What Are MY Future Goals?

What are YOUR future goals? Have you thought about the direction your blog, career, or writing will take in the coming months? I have!

The fact is, I want MORE! In 2008 I made some significant leaps forward. I had some wonderful commissions, committed to a few long term projects, and began to step away from freelance writing to encompass my love of editing and web technology. I grew as a freelancer, and it was wonderful, but what I have today is not enough to sate my appetite for the work I do.

In 2009, I am dedicated to maximizing my potential. I am putting a great deal more of my every day energy into my current projects and spending several hours a week actively seeking new job leads, marketing my services, and socializing through the community.

What turn can you take to re-awaken your snoozing career?

I will develop strong, balanced, and giving friendships. Freelancers often lead rather solitary lives. I’ve found that embracing others enlivens me. I need to be able to turn to a friend when I’m struggling with fear or to share my joys.

I’ve never truly felt comfortable reaching out to others. As such, making friends is a constant struggle. This year I want to learn more about making and sustaining enriching relationships. I want to embrace friendship with people who share my passion for freelancing, web technology, writing, and more. Do you want to be a part of that with me?

What can you do to propel your career in the direction it wants to go?

I am committed to finishing my current novel. I will be in New York from the 26th of May to the 2nd of June, 2009 and will pitch my book at the pitch slam following Writer’s Digest’s Writer’s Conference. A great deal of work remains to be done. I really need to knuckle down and GET IT FINISHED!

This project has been hindered a great deal by fear. I fight against an anxiety attack every time I come to the screen with the intention of writing another scene. I don’t understand what causes this fear. There are a thousand reasons and yet none of them compare to the prospect of NOT finishing. To propel my career forward I must finish this book and fear is no longer permitted to stand in my way.

Are you working on projects that have become stale?

My plurk friend, Shelley Heath, recently said, “Maybe your heart is not really into it as a topic anymore. Maybe you need to spread the wings further and catch something of interest“. Honestly, I don’t believe it the case on that occasion but there are elements I’ve become disheartened with. As freelancers, we must be involved in the sales aspect of our business. It is vital to be able to sell yourself and your services. This is an aspect of the business I’ve always struggled with.

Part of what I do in cooperative effort with Miss Michele and Serenity Bly of Future-Tarot.com is write copy for their weblog. SALES copy. There are fantastic readings available but the copy on the page needs to ‘call to action’ those who visit, it needs to entice them to buy, it needs to SELL itself. I know I can write sales copy but for some reason the prospect has been leaving me stale.

The project itself is one I LOVE, either I need to find a way to get beyond my sales copy blockage, or hire a writer to write the sales copy for me. I would much rather focus on the web technology and maintenance aspects. That is one fact that leads me to Jenny’s final question:

Do you need to find a new niche?

I have spent a great deal of time focused on the idea of myself as a freelance writer. I write very well and I can admit that, but my heart isn’t really in putting words to a page. Writing non-fiction is something I feel dispassionate about. I NEED to create, and web copy, sales copy, non-fiction articles, magazine articles and etc. just doesn’t spark my fire of creativity.

I need to focus on those elements where I can FEEL my creativity thrive. The design and programming I do as a Web Technician, for example, creates something real and visually tangible. It also caters to my need for instant gratification because every time I write a new program or edit a design element I can SEE it in action immediately. THAT is where I want to put my focus. That is the niche I feel most comfortable within.

Ask Yourself These Questions

How are you feeling about your career and the direction of your life going into the coming months? Can you answer Jenny’s questions, make changes, and buoy your hope that this year will be one for fantastic change and growth?

With the New Year firmly upon us the web is alight with New Year Resolutions and inspirational goals. It is time to examine the year gone by and look ahead to decide what 2009 will bring.

For me, 2009 holds fear and uncertainty. With any opportunity for major growth and development there is an element of risk. This year, my youngest starts full-time school; expectations rise for all of us.

This is my final year to establish my freelancing career to a self-sustaining level before all other income sources are withdrawn. This, I suppose, is my primary concern. For two years I’ve tinkered through good intentions. Each month I would vow to make headway towards regular and steady income opportunities but I look back and find myself no closer to my goals then when I set them.

I’m inspired by the success of my friends and colleagues but challenged by personal insecurities and emotional retardation. I try not to allow myself to divert responsibility but every hurdle challenges my faith in myself.

What inner demons challenge you in your quest for success?

Do you have a positive attitude about your writing? Chances are that you don’t; many writers develop a negative mind set without being aware of it. This can cripple your writing career.

In this article, we’ll look at ways to develop a positive attitude. Here’s why this is essential:

With a positive attitude, you’ll be more productive. You’ll write more, and if your goal is selling your writing, you’ll sell more;

You’ll be happier and easier to live with. Your writing places demands on the people in your life: a stressed writer is unhappy, and your misery spreads to others;

You’ll realize that writing is a journey. When you become “successful” — however you define it — you’ll discover that writing is what motivates you. So since writing is what makes you happy, a positive attitude helps you to enjoy your journey;

You’ll be easier to work with. The other writing professionals in your life, your agent if you have one, and your editors, want to work with writers with a positive attitude. If you’re negative, you will never have the career you could enjoy.

So how do you develop a positive attitude?

From Negative to “Yes, I Can!”

Becoming positive is a decision. You decide. Make the decision now: that whatever happens, you will maintain a positive attitude and that your mantra will be: “Yes, I Can!”

There — easy, wasn’t it?

Please don’t over-complicate this… decide.

Everything’s Great when You’re Thinking’s Straight

Now you’ve made a decision to have a “Yes, I Can!” positive attitude, say “Yes, I Can!” often throughout your day.

Daydream too. What would your life be like if you had achieved your current writing goals? What would change? What would stay the same?

If you don’t have goals, create at least one goal right now. Got it? Great. Now say “Yes, I Can!” to that goal.

Your writing will be much more fun when your thinking is straight.

Turn Every Failure Into a Winner

Every writer is rejected. Sooner or later you’ll realize that rejections are just part of a writer’s life, and not only will rejections stop stinging, they will also become valuable information you can use.

Let’s see how this works. Your novel has just been rejected by default. Three months have passed since you sent chapters and a synopsis to publisher X who asked to see the material in response to a query letter…

With your “Yes, I Can!” mantra at the forefront of your thoughts, you print up several more copies of your original query letter and slip them into envelopes you’ve printed up. You’ll drop them in the mail box tomorrow morning.

When you have a positive attitude, rejections are feedback, and they’ll motivate you, rather than depressing you.

Let Your Writing Guide You — Drop Expectations

Your writing is always the best you can do, at a single point in time. Your writing changes. It improves: that’s what happens when you practice writing.

You need goals for your writing, but drop expectations. The only thing you control is your writing. Accept that, and accept that your expectations are the result of insufficient data. You can’t know what will happen with any particular piece of writing, so just keep setting goals and writing to achieve them.

Remember “Yes, I Can!” A positive attitude grows from that simple sentence. Keep your attitude positive, and there are no limits to what you can achieve.

In the ever-expanding universe of cyberspace, one of our greatest challenges is attracting visitors. When it comes to blogging our visitors are a vital element that breathes life into our corner of the cyber galaxy. Visitors will, hopefully, turn into regular readers who comment and offer an interactivity that increases our enjoyment as bloggers. Does anyone enjoy talking to an empty room?

Creating a website or blog simply isn’t enough to carve out your own nook. These days you must get out there and spread the word. There are so many ways to attract visitors and some are more successful than others. What works?

Search Engines: Do you Google?

Search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, are overloaded with sites and web pages. From millions of results it takes a great deal of effort to ensure your site registers in the first few pages. For bloggers interested in gaining the most benefit from their search engine listings I recommend keeping on top of the latest Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. Terms such as: keyword placement, meta tags, robot.txt etc. hold meanings that could equal significant traffic if you learn to use SEO techniques effectively.

Socializing, Community and Participation

Community participation is another way to develop inbound links. By befriending others in your sphere you can create a social circle on blog rolls, forums, groups and blog comments. It is important to be an active member online because we all learn from each other; constantly expanding our experiences.

Social Media – Connect and Interact

Social Media is one of the newer innovations to bring people together. With websites such as Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, Myspace, Digg, LinkedIn, Del.ic.ious, MyBlogLog, StumbleUpon and many more we link together as a community sharing interests, making new friends and discovering other hemispheres on the web.

Hit and Miss? No More! – Be Valuable

These mediums can be a hit and miss experience when trying to build your brand or grow your blog community. Members are often more interested in what they can get out of their participation. It is important to offer potential readers value but it’s equally important to give value as a community member. When you give to others you’ll find you receive in return.

Never Enough Hours – Finding Balance

With the many pressures involved in ensuring your blog continues to grow it can sometimes be challenging to find the time to factor in all of these elements. Creating content should always be your primary concern because the myth, “build it and they will come” is true to some degree. Without anything other than content you will gain readers, slowly, almost imperceptibly. With great content everything else is optional. Each moment you spend in marketing however will increase the speed of your growth exponentially.

Find a balance and make sure the demands you put on yourself don’t go beyond your boundaries. There is no point treating your blog like a full time job if you already work full time, especially if you haven’t monetized your pages. It is true that with hard work and dedication you could turn blogging into a full-time career but it is often better to start slow, enjoy the process of establishing your readership and create a true bond with your visitors and your topic.

What would you like to do?

Where would you like to go?

What would you like to create?

What skills would you like to develop?

What abilities would you like?

What are some character traits you’d like to develop within yourself?

What would you like to master?

how do you want to feel about yourself?

What are some fears you’d like to conquer?

Consider travel, education, creativity, and hobbies. Think about your spiritual beliefs and the spiritual accomplishments you’d like to make. Focus on your physical body, your health, your energy, your mind.

Personal Development Goals include those relating to your Career.

What kind of job do you want?

What would you like to study?

What would you like to add to your resume?

Who would you like to work for?

What do you want from staff you hire?

What direction do you want your career to take?

Your personal goals may include places you’d like to visit, people you want to meet, charities you’ve wanted to volunteer with, or languages you wish you could speak. Remember, when you list these goals that nothing is impossible. Be creative, be outrageous, dream! Explore your desires, cherish your wishes, reach for the stars and ask for the moon. This is YOUR wishlist, you can have everything you want, write it down, Now!
