Today, I experienced a new venture in the world of blogging; my very first opportunity to guest post. The lovely Becky of Deep Muck, Big Rake is away and lined up a number of guest posters to keep her readers entertained. I had the delightful privilege of being today’s guest.

Guest posting and having guests post on The Writer’s Round-About has been something I’ve thought about for the last few months. Knowing how to ask for either option is a difficulty I was still building up to. The opportunity Becky offered seemed to have ideal timing and I was very glad to be able to participate.

Guest Blogging offers benefits for both bloggers. From a guest blogger perspective there is an opportunity to display our expertise to new readers, incorporate inbound links to our own site, meet new people, write for a broader range of readers and offer a hand to a blogger in need.

Being the host blog is also an enriching experience. Sharing new voices and new perspectives with readers is an opportunity many bloggers neglect. The diversity offered by guest posters can re-inspire a blog and offer our regular readers freshness and broader horizons.

It is also wonderful to build up a collection of guest posts and guest posters to fill in when we’re unable to post. It is important to develop a backlog of entries to use in an off week (something I keep meaning to do) and guest posts are another way to strengthen that backup foundation.

I would love to allow other writers an opportunity to guest post here at The Writer’s Round-About. I’m very interested in sharing this blogging experience with others who share an interest in language, words and writing. Would you like me to guest post on your blog? Just ask, it’s a wonderful opportunity for all involved.

I hope you have all been enjoying the posts on The Writer’s Round-About. Feel free to check out my post, “Writing From The Heart“, at Deep Muck, Big Rake. If you have any ideas or suggestions for this blog, would like to guest post here or would like me to be a guest blogger on your own blog let me know.

Have you guest blogged before? What do you enjoy most about guest blogging and reading guest posts? Are there benefits I haven’t mentioned? Feel free to share your experiences; I’d love to know more.

I haven’t guest posted before but it’s on my to do list. I think my own blog is too young right now to start bringing in guest posters, but it’s definitely something I’d like to work on later next year. As for providing guest posts – I have seen this discussed elsewhere and it’s unclear whether you pitch a guest post to a blogger, or wait for an invitation. Maybe both? Either/or? Also, is pay involved?

    Hmmm.

I’m not sure what the protocol is either. That’s why I put out a general invitation. If you’d like to guest post here or you’d like me to guest post on your blog, just ask. I’d love to have you guest post here, Melissa. (And you too Michele)

I think sometimes guest posts are paid but perhaps mostly not. I find reciprocation the best payment. If I guest post somewhere I’d like to be able to ask for the same in return. If you guest post here then I’d love to repay the favor at some point.

What it really comes down to is having the courage to ask. You’d be amazed how often people will say, “Yes”, when we expected them to say, “No”. It is important to take a chance or two from time to time.

Thanks Rebecca! I’ll certainly keep that in mind!

Oh, I’m honored, Rebecca! Like Melissa, I’ll keep your offer in mind. :-)

And the same goes for you. I’d be honored to have you guest post at Writing the Cyber Highway (you too, Melissa!).

I’ll talk to you more via email.

    Rebecca,

Just read your guest post and enjoyed it!

While I haven’t personally done any guest posting up to this point, I’ve been giving the idea a bit of thought lately, and I may just begin doing so in 2008.

For those who may be wondering about possible compensation, Freelance Switch is one blog that pays for guest posts.

I’ll hope you keep The Writer’s Round-About in mind when you’re ready to do some guest posts, Jeanne. I’d love to have you here and I’d be happy to reciprocate. Thanks for the Freelance Switch tip off. Paid guest posts sound like a fabulous opportunity for greater guest blogging benefits.

    Rebecca,

I’m honored by your interest in trading guest posts with me! It’s definitely a project I’ll keep in mind for the not-too-distant future!

Happy to share the info on Freelance Switch. It does appear to be a lucrative guest-posting venue–in more ways than one.

    Thanks!
    Jeanne
